birds go about their business
with quiet chirps…
we chat about the weather
and pull out the snuggling quilt

ocean walk
salt meadow cordgrass grows
so close together
the way we lean in
to keep each other warm
clouds sail along
endless in a vast sky
wandering
up and down in the dunes . . .
my mind chases down a poem
a million shells
drift in and out with the tide
at sunset
we hoard whatever is left
of our lives together

the sun slowly rises.
utterly silent
a deer moves out of the mist
filling my eyes with her eyes

the hyssop and mint
in the garden
we plant an oak sapling
for the newborn
